The Panda Wars
I attended my first Jelly today….. basically, Jelly is what happens when people get bored working from home on their own, and decide to all hangout in someones house for the day.
Anyway, today’s Jelly had a talk from Jeffrey Kalmikoff of Threadless and Heather Champ of Flickr on Community Management. Two really excellent speakers.
The story I loved most was from Heather on local memes that exist in Flickr. She told the story of two Panda groups on Flickr. The ‘Conserve the Panda’ group and another which I think was along the lines of the ‘Popular Panda’ group. Anyway, rivalry between the two groups got heated when someone from the ‘Conserve the Panda’ group, over a course of several months, infiltrated the ‘Popular Panda’ group, gained the trust of the community to become an Admin, and then proceeded to inflict havoc by banning key users, deleting photos and turning the group private.
The incident lies in the lore of Flickr and is affectionately known as the Panda Wars. This graphic at http://www.flickr.com/explore/panda commemorates the episode.
I was pitching Hollrr to a VC friend of mine today. We were sitting outside a cafe and this homeless guy walks up and listens intently as I finish my pitch. As I finish, he turns to my friend and says ‘this guy is so full of bullshit’.
I guess you win some, lose some :)
